Pre-Assessment: Signal Cards
Before completing any of the activities, whether it be as a class or individually, prepare signal cards and have them on each student's desk. The red card means, 'STOP' and the student needs help. The yellow card means, 'SLOW DOWN' and the student needs further explanations and possibly more time to process the information. The green card means, 'CONTINUE' because the students know the answers and understands the content. Therefore, as assignments are completed, these signal cards will show the teacher how the students are doing on the assignments and whether or not they need help.
Pre-Assessment: What Do I Know Already?
This pre-assessment (pages 8-9), which can also be used as a formal assessment (pages 10-11), is a chart that can be completed as a class to discuss what students already know about Native Americans. This can be used at the beginning of this unit to start having the students think about Native Americans. There are also guidelines for the teacher to lead the discussions.
Informal Assessment: Ticket Out The Door
For some of the assignments throughout this unit that the students may complete, you may have students complete a ticket out the door. This informal assessment will provide information on what the students have learned, any interesting facts they might've come across, and a question that they might still be unclear about that should be addressed. This will help the teacher see what the students have learned, what they find interesting, and what they still need clarified.
Informal Assessment: The First Americans and Thanksgiving
The first page of this informal assessment is called, "The First Americans" and the top half has the students color the pictures that show things used by the Native Americans long ago. The bottom half has the students draw a picture of something that Native Americans made with clay. ***However, instead of drawing something that the Native Americans made with clay, they can draw anything that comes to their mind when they think of Native Americans that they have learned so far.
The second page of this informal assessment is called, "Thanksgiving" and students will be drawing a picture of a Thanksgiving meal and sharing their pictures with the class.

After, circle THEN if the picture shows what our country was like long age. Finally, students can color the pictures.
The second page of this formal assessment is called, "The Thanksgiving Story" and students will observe the pictures and put them in order by numbering each picture 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Formal Assessment: Wrap-Up To Unit
This formal assessment will provide students a chance to wrap-up some of the information they learned throughout the unit on Native Americans. They will observe the pictures in each row and as they follow the teacher's directions, they will circle the correct picture in each row.
